STORAGE TIPS

PREPARING FOR STORAGE

  • Use clear containers, boxes or bags to store smaller items. This makes for easy identification.

  • Label all boxes on each side as things generally get moved around or repositioned in the unit.

  • Label "FRAGILE" on outside of boxes containing any breakable items.

  • Drain any liquids when storing machinery such as lawnmowers.

  • Put a lid on containers and boxes when possible as units become dusty over time.

  • Save space by taking apart furniture such as taking legs of tables or breaking down bed frames. Always remember to tape accompanying screws, nuts or bolts to the pieces for future use.

PACKING YOUR UNIT

  • Place moving blankets, pallets or boards down before moving items into the unit. This keeps items off of the floor where flooding can occur.

  • Strategize your packing. When stacking items, put heavier on the bottom and lighter or fragile on top.

  • Think about what you will want access to. Pack frequently used items up front or on top.

  • Cover items with blankets or plastic sheeting whenever possible. Units will acquire dust with time.

  • Make the most of your storage unit space by placing small items inside drawers of dressers or inside places such as an oven or refrigerator.

  • Place valuable items furthest from the door, out of view for those passing by.

  • When storing business files, leave a walkway down the center of your unit to make access easier.
